The Style Guru: Traveling Without Looking Like a Tourist

Are you doing some traveling this summer? Well if you are one of the lucky ones, it might be a good idea to review some do’s and don’ts for traveling in style. If you are like me, then there is always that initial desire to give up, throw your hair in a ponytail, wear some sweats and away you go.  However, if you are staying within Europe, it is important to remember that Europeans dress to impress and you don’t want to be labelled a frumpy traveler.  Thankfully, you don’t need to go and buyout a designer label to get that fashionable impression you’re looking for. You just need a few key items to help you on your way.

Firstly, comfort is important, especially if you are planning on traveling overseas. That does not necessarily mean that you need to look sloppy; remember pajamas and sweat pants need to stay in the bedroom.  Try trading those yoga pants for some black skinny jeans; they are easy, fashionable and can move with your body as you curl up to read or sleep.  For an ultimately, cool, casual look pair your favorite jeans with a loose v-neck. They are flattering and classically stylish.

Another tip is layers. Layering is the key no matter where the destination; planes are usually air conditioned, and therefore cold, so an extra cardigan would be ideal. I prefer an oversized button down, because the buttons will help make the outfit look less sloppy, and avoiding tight layers will help you keep comfy.  For a little added warmth and style add a lightweight scarf, they are cute and always in style.

Comfy shoes are a must! This tip comes right from the heart; imagine if you will a little fashionista transferring planes in Amsterdam. She has on new high heels and a carry-on, running her heart out from one end of the airport to the other, and then back. It was a fate worse than death; somehow I managed to avoid giving into the temptation, ripping off my heels and running like a mad woman! So from now on, comfortable shoes are a must. Whether that is flats or boots, we all know what we like and wearing those new lovely shoes you just purchased will only bring you pain and annoyance.

In closing here are a few other key tips

  • Remember sunglasses, even if you will be inside a plane all day, after a long trip you will appreciate something to cover those tired eyes.
  • Try not to wear a lot of jewelry, you will need to take it all off for security, and you are less likely to misplace your precious gems if they are left at home or in your suitcase.
  • Avoid wearing clothing with studs it will get uncomfortable. The last thing you need is studded pockets pinching you for hours on end.
  • Avoid wearing too much makeup. You will likely have runny and smudgy makeup after a few hours. You can touch it up before you land, and you can always add a bit of lipstick to make you look fresh.
