There’s a freeze warning in Phoenix today. Inspired by this unusually chilly weather, I decided to tackle a DIY that I’ve been dying to do for a few weeks now; turn a jersey pillowcase into a circle scarf. And let me tell you, I’m in love. This project was ridiculously easy and though it required some sewing, there is a “no-sew” alternative which I’ll mention later on in this post. The idea was inspired by the ever-popular circle scarf from American Apparel. While I love American Apparel, I can’t bring myself to spend $28.00 on one. This scarf is a dead ringer for theirs and will only cost you $12.00 for TWO scarves! One for yourself and one for a friend or both for yourself, I wont judge. Alright, let’s begin.

Supplies:

One jersey fabric pillowcase (I purchased this one from Target for $12.00, King size. I do love the extra long length, but IMO you could totally go with a Queen and be fine. You’d also save a few bucks. Pillowcases are generally sold in pairs so use the second as a back-up, gift, extra one for yourself or as a traditional pillowcase on your bed!)

Scissors

Sewing Machine (If you want to do a “no-sew” version, I recommend gluing with Fabri-Tac glue as a sewing substitute. This is the same glue I used in my TOMS DIY here.

Thread

*Note: The pictures are step-by-step with instructions but since the material is so long, it’s hard to get all of it in one shot. I always do my best to answer questions to please leave a comment if you need any help or clarification at all! Thanks for reading Carbon!

Good luck!

Many colors are trending this F/W, but there is one color that has been off the radar among the masses (maybe for personal reasons), that upcoming star is Orange! Perhaps many people are under the impression they cannot pull off a shade of orange because of the tone of their skin or hair! maybe some people have a personal dislike toward the rich color! for whatever reason, we need to start looking at Orange with a new and fresh perspective because it is very much a trending color now!

The hottest shades of orange are two polar opposites, a vibrant citrus tangerine or a gentle burnt orange. this is actually perfect for those who aren’t keen on orange, you have two choices to suit your personal preference! think of the colour orange as working overtime now heading into winter, since it was a popular colour during the summer as well. when pairing other colours with orange try to go for neutrals like black or beige! if you want to go for a very vibrant fashion forward look try pairing orange with a deep red or fuchsia!

orange is actually a very natural colour to choose, its reflected in the natural elements such as fallen leaves, the sun, various fruits etc. orange is a colour you seen very often in the natural world and should be given a more serious thought and approach. orange isn’t just playful colour, it’s very chic too. it’s a very easy to wear colour when you use it as a pop piece in your outfit such as a tailored coat. just avoid wearing orange head to toe and you wont go wrong!

and remember, colours are literally seasonless and colours are for everyone! don’t always assume some make you look washed out or frumpy etc, you need to have a positive mindset and figure out how to work it! don’t let a colour work you, you can wear anything in confidence!

<img class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-8634" title="LEFT: Versace f/w12.

Magenta & violet & turquoise, oh my.

In early 2012, Lauren Conrad started a hair color craze. She dip dyed the tips of her locks with vibrantly vivid color. Her blonde hair ombré’d into light pinks and navy blues. Usually seen as a punk trend, the fashion world quickly caught on. Kelly Osbourne dyed her ‘do lavender. Kate Bosworth dip dyed her blonde locks teal. The extremely interesting trend trickled down to bloggers and fashionistas everywhere. If you’re dying to dye but a bit of a commitment phobe (like myself) & can’t stand to part with your perfectly toned natural color, shop Sandy and Krista’s beautiful hair accessories at Miss Violet Lace.

Miss Violet Lace offers a gorgeous collection of clip in hair extensions or, if you’d like a full head of color, wigs! They are all dyed carefully to steal the spotlight. Easily attached extensions sit beneath your hair and pop out against your natural locks. Wigs are fitted and full to look as natural as possible.

The Interview

Carbon Magazine: What is the inspiration behind creating your wigs & extensions?

Krista: We are inspired most often by our surroundings… music, our mood and the changing of seasons. I draw inspiration from different places I go and things I see, as well as fashion. We try to stay away from anything too ‘trendy’, because it’s important for us to keep our hair pieces timeless.

CM: If you could see your designs on anyone in the world, who would it be?

K: The first person that comes to mind is Katy Perry, because she has shown so many people that wigs can be fun and sexy, never boring…but I think we both feel that it would be most fulfilling to see someone who doesn’t have hair (due to medical or other reasons) receive and wear a wig. Knowing that I have a part in making someone feel comforted, beautiful…that is what it’s really all about.

CM: What is the reasoning behind your store/brand’s name?

K: The name ‘Miss Violet Lace’ is a combination of my and my business partner’s likes – I love the color purple, so we both agreed ‘violet’ would be lovely as part of the name. My business partner (and mom!) Sandy loves all things romantic, so we thought the word ‘lace’ would describe that, and go well with the name too.
We wanted the name to have more of a ‘personal’ touch though, so we eventually agreed on ‘Miss Violet Lace’. We aren’t just a brand — we want others to know that there are real living, breathing people behind the name, and having our brand name be believable as a real person’s name reflects that.

CM: Favorite fall hair/fashion trend?

K: I am quite partial to the ombre effect (gradual fade from dark to light), but I feel that it has been somewhat overplayed, so we like to do our own take on it, with reverse ombre (light to dark) and color ombre effects.

CM: Tips on caring for your wigs/extensions?

K: The most important thing I can tell others that will extend the life of their wigs is to brush carefully. The fastest thing that will wear it out is brushing too hard and pulling on the hair. Using a wide toothed comb, start at the bottom and work your way towards the top, gently brushing out any tangles.

Product Review

With extremely thin, blonde hair, I’ve always been a fan of extensions. Miss Violet Lace provides beautifully cut and colored real human hair extensions that can withstand heat products and washing. They look and feel real, even when dyed an unnatural color. The clips are comfortable and the results are incredible. You can now change your hair as often and as easy as your ensemble! If you’re a high fashion trend follower, shop Miss Violet Lace now and get your dip dyed ‘do as soon as possible!

*For more on Krista & Sandy’s shop, make sure to pick up a copy of our December issue, premiering December 10th!

In the world of high fashion— anything goes. This look incorporated a vintage puffy shoulder top with a pair of mustard pants. The black booties work well with the scrunched up pant to show off the leg, as well as the elongating poses the model, Renua, is doing. The statement bracelet and earrings along with the Ozzy and John legend inspired shades pull the look together and give her an edgy, bad ass feel.

Surprise surprise — the modeling world isn’t all it seems to be. Kate Moss recently opened up to Vanity Fair about her miserable early modeling days and her hatred of having her photo taken. As many know, the 90s-bred supermodel and her career boasts hundred of glossy magazine covers and a glamorous jet-setting life as a socialite. What we don’t see in those photos and the shots the paparazzi have caught is vulnerable girl full of regrets. The model gives several examples of these modeling-related regrets in VF’s December issue, but the most impacting regret she cites is when young Moss posed nude for The Face.

“I see a 16-year-old now, and to ask her to take her clothes off would feel really weird. But they were like, ‘If you don’t do it, then we’re not going to book you again.’ So I’d lock myself in the toilet and cry and then come out and do it.”

Moss also went in depth on her false associations with heroine and her whirlwind romance with Johnny Depp. Get the lowdown on this supermodel’s life, career and the untold story when Vanity Fair hits stands next month.

Certain trends tend to swing in and out of the fashion scene, and depending on what trend it is some of us are very thankful they do! Either we sigh in relief “So glad (__insert trend here__) is finally out of style. Sigh, we better not see it trending anytime soon!”, or we beam excitement “I’m so glad this is trending again!
Whether you want to hear it or not, most people will choose the easy way out and go for a clean cut sequin dress. Why? It’s easy and looks great! There’s nothing wrong with a sequin dress, and if you decide to take that route, stick to styles that are cut with clean lines and shapes that add sophistication to the dress. Try out different colours and dress lengths for a more flirty or seductive take.

Now if you decide to go for separates, definitely pick up a pair of sequined tights or pants! Not only are they interesting, you can dress them up or down, which is a tremendous bonus since sequins sometimes read more formal! Blazers with sequin detailing are also super trendy now; it’s just enough dazzle to uplift your outfit! If you want to incorporate sequin into your look while being able to jump in and out of the formal scene, then sequined separates are a good choice!

So whether you’re heading uptown or downtown seek out a sassy sequined look, with all the options you have, you’ll be sure to have fun putting an outfit together and look good too!

It’s finally their time to shine; the collar is stealing the limelight on literally any garment possible these days! It began trending seasons ago with shape, like the peter pan, bow or shawl collar. The trendy collar shapes have now evolved into trending collar embellishments! So now we have an array of different collar types with just as many embellished to choose from!

Jewels, studs, chains, pearls, other metal fixtures and contrast fabric like fur can be found adorn to majority of collars this season! The best part about this fun trend is the playfulness and the sense of adventure due to the option of buying detachable collars! Detachable collars act more like accessories, which you can use to dress up just about any garment! Because you can easily do and undo, there isn’t a real commitment like buying a whole shirt and you get the flexibility of mixing and matching. Also not to mention its cheaper buying just a collar, which means you could technically get more bang for your buck!

Since the cold weather is undoubtedly upon us, the embellished collar works wonders adding an instant update to items like cardigans or chunky pullover sweaters! The spritz of eye catching details in the collar can add to your cozy look by making it look more polished and chic! Don’t forget when layering it’s always best to not match your collar to the rest of your outfit so it can really stand out. You might think it’s too quirky or too playful looking, but it actually draws people into your face by creating a point of interest!

If you’re feeling crafty, embellished collars are an easy DIY! Head to your local craft and fabric stores to scoop up little embellishments to sew, iron or fabric glue onto your collars! You can even check out accessories like pins and broaches to simply pin onto your collar, that way you can easily unpin later!

Zara and H&M have a great selection of frosted collars, but many other big name retailers do too! H&M have many detachable collars while other retailers carry more shirts/blouses with the collars already embellished!

We all have those days when you wake up, thinking you are going to shower in the morning, and well it just doesn’t happen. Whether you miss your alarm or hit snooze one too many times either way you end up running late. It is a struggle enough trying to pick out what to wear after while in a rush, but let alone having to worry about your hair. Well, that problem has finally been solved. I’ve never been a huge fan of dry shampoo as ones that I have tried before make my hair look flaky and well worse than what it started off to be. So I thought I would try again. I purchased TGI HairCare Rockaholic Dry Shampoo and fell in love.

I do not usually have the issue of greasy hair, but for those days where I am running late and need a little help with my hair this is the perfect product. By just shaking the can and spraying directly into the roots of your hair, instantly you receive volume and texture without that extra shine. With one simple brush through after you are ready to go. No extra stress of having to quickly jump into the shower, wash your hair, and run out the door with soaking wet locks.

No one will ever know that you did not wash your hair that morning as it will look and smell as if you did! Being in college, this is a struggle I face weekly, and this product has been a life-saver so far! Even for those days where I intentionally want to sleep in and don’t want to get ready this becomes by go-to product. The best part is it does not leave your hair feeling thick and hard, but smooth and refreshed as if you were to wash it.

This can be purchased at most local Ulta’s, Targets and other retail stores. For around $20.00 a bottle this is truly worth it. Remember, one spray goes a long way!

Many of us college fashionistas are enjoying the perks of fall; pumpkin spice lattes, pea-coats and ankle boots, and signing leases for next year’s off-campus living arrangements! Okay…so the last one isn’t as fun, but for some it is the first time living in a house or apartment, and with that comes decorating! Pinterest is a huge help, but for spicing up my living space, I’m shopping Csera & The Surface Designs.

The Interview

Carbon Magazine: What is the inspiration behind creating the phone cases and pillows?

Carly: Not being able to find what I wanted to adorn my home and phone, it inspired me to create my own line.

CM: How do you describe your brand’s personal style?

C: Earthy, eco loving and mischievous!

CM: Do you have a muse when it comes to designing?

C: The late Alexander McQueen and Vivienne Westwood are my idols.

CM: How do you think your brand stands out amongst other companies that sell a similar product?

C: I am a textile designer, illustrator, artist and graphic designer all rolled into one. I give people what they love. My products are all handmade with love and I do this for the love of art, fashion and illustration…not profit.

CM: How do you stay updated on the latest trends?

C: Reading your magazine of course!

CM: What kind of person do you design for?

C: Hmm, toughy…my pillows and cases are literally for everyone. All ages, genders, and styles. But to narrow it down, a young 18-30 year old with a wicked sense of style and an attitude to match!

The Review

I received a wonderfully designed phone case and pillow from Carly. The phone case was as unique as possible, fit for a fashionista. The style and durability allowed my clumsy self to drop my phone multiple times and still look stylish doing it. The pillow accented my dorm room perfectly! I color-blocked my dorm space into a few neutral colors, but throwing in the attention-catching piece was exactly what It needed. While most dorms don’t allow much décor, you can make your living space into a home thanks to Carly & The Surface Designs.
