The Style Guru: How to Wear Chinos, Men And Women

Chinos are the smart alternative to jeans. They’re easy to wear and make you look like you’ve tried harder than you actually have.  They’re handy to have in your wardrobe for last minute situations, like an unexpected night out or a college interview.  The chinos that look the best on the runway are tapered or skinny, creating a sleek, Audrey Hepburn-like silhouette.  They’re also great for men and make even the most laidback guys look like fashion enthusiasts.

Black or navy chinos can be great for interviews or for relaxed work-wear.  Team them with a blouse and a blazer for a more formal occasion.  You can transfer them into a nightwear look by putting a pair of chinos on with a loose top and wedges.  If they’re high-waisted you can wear them with a cropped top.

Instead of relying on your top for bold color, browse the chinos spectrum, from reds and rich browns to forest green and royal blue. My tips for styling Chinos are to keep it classic, go for clean lines and don’t over-dress them. Wedges or brogues go well with Chinos.

Some men seem to be afraid of Chinos.  Back in the day, Chinos were associated with being geeky, socially inept.  They’re totally acceptable in the fashion world these days.  They don’t have to be in bold colours or worn baggy.  The best Chinos for men are in earthy colours.  Wear them loose around the top half and tapered at the ends.  They can be worn with blazers for a night-time look or if you need smart-casual outfit.  They are also great when teamed with a jumper and a leather jacket.
