Love Sick: First Impressions

You never get a second chance to make a first impression. Which is why when you’re getting ready for a first date, you’re getting ready like you did for your senior prom. Teeth whitening? Check. Hair curling/straightening? Check. Going to Sephora to get your make-up done? Let’s hope not, I think you can handle that on your own.

Once you’ve got yourself looking like Audrey Hepburn in Breakfast at Tiffany’s, you realize something. You don’t know what to wear! The first date outfit it very important. You want a look that’s going to impress without being  overwhelming and the line between the two can sometimes be very thin.

The first thing in helping you decide an appropriate outfit is finding out what your doing on the date. Usually first dates consist of dinner and a movie. If this is what your date has planned out for you, I suggest wearing a cute summer dress that isn’t too dressy or too slutty with a pair of flats. Wearing heels is a no-no on first dates because A) What if you’re taller than him in heels? Awkward and B) You don’t want to be that annoying girl that can barely teeter around without having to sit down every five minutes while complaining of bunion pain. Plus, aren’t you nervous enough on the first date? Do you really want to have to worry about falling flat on your face because you thought your 4-inch black pumps were a good idea? No, no you don’t.

Now what if your date is activity based? Maybe you’re going bowling or out to play mini-golf? You don’t want to lose the cute factor but you also don’t want your outfit to hinder your ability to bowl a 250 (Hah!). Nice jeans and a blouse are always a good idea for this kind of date, but don’t rule out the romper. It took me awhile to get used to the idea of wearing something that forced you to completely undress when going to the bathroom, but the romper is an adorable combination of a dress and shorts that makes it easy to get active without worrying about showing some ass cheek. When worn with a cardigan and a pair of slip-on shoes like Keds or TOMS, the romper is the perfect outfit for a playful first date.

No matter what you end up wearing, remember the most important thing about a first date is to be yourself. You may be nervous but keep in mind that your date is nervous too. If you can let yourself relax and have a good time, then you will likely be asked on a second date and before you know it the two of you will be serious and allowed to wear sweats on a date, yay!
