Ever Present Past: Demonic Beatniks

Tomorrow night I’m going to a concert to see a band from New York, and hence I’m kinda running on a very Downtown Manhattan, Psychedelic Rock and Avant-Garde feel. So this week I’m going to be writing about The Velvet Underground and their beautiful singer, Nico, who makes me die with jealousy of her swooning voice and amazing full bangs. The Velvet Underground were brought to the surface by none other than Andy Warhol. Warhol’s studio called, The Factory, was the top place for parties and where the New York misfit kids from the Midwest would come and meet underpaid artists, prostitutes, drug addicts and anyone with who wanted to be stared at with envy could be found. Tom Ford is a prime example of this, within a week of moving to the city he found himself hanging out in Andy’s studio and we all know that now Mr. Ford may be one of the most important minds in artist expression. I can only imagine the inspiration must have been thicker than honey in The Factory’s prime years of 1962 to 1968. But for now let’s talk about the influences that are running through my veins right now…

Nico’s Style: A man’s styled jacket with heavy bangs draped almost over the eyes was her signature look. It completed her dressed-up-tomboy-look which also was perfect for photos. She almost looked like one of the lads in the majority of the band’s photos.

Over-sized Prints: Stripes and polka dots are two prints you can’t go wrong with. They look fab when you pair them with a great tight, legging, disco pant or trouser.

Circle Sunnies: A must have for any sunglasses collection! I live in a very warm climate so I’m lucky in a way because I can wear them year round, however I’m a firm believer that if your wearing jeans and a T-shirt or a fab faux fur coat, a trend like this shows that you’re a fashion risk taker, so throw em’ on!

Felt Floppy Hat: This is a fall staple! You won’t want to feel left out on this super great trend. Buy one at Forever 21, Urban Outfitters or American Apparel.

Depressed Romantics is the only way I can describe the groups of people that flocked to The Factory in the late ’60s and ’70s to have that flitting moment of knowing you are a part of a world that was so beautiful yet “The Black Angels Death Song” was always circling around you at night when walking home through Central Park.
