Ever Present Past: Elizabeth Taylor

Elizabeth Taylor

Elizabeth Taylor was born in England on February 27th, 1932 to an art dealer and a former actress. She lived in the UK until her family relocated to LA to escape from World War II when she was seven. Her father opened an art gallery which brought in lots of famous Hollywood actors who encouraged Elizabeth’s parents to put her in films They were not thrilled with the idea.

In spite of this, they gave in and signed her to a film contract. However, the studios were not impressed with her film test as they felt she looked too old and her violet eyes were too shocking for color, so they fired her. Her film career was later restarted when she appeared in Lassie Come Home. Then came National Velvet, the movie that made people fall head over heels in love with Taylor. She was smart, beautiful, and mature in comparison to rival actresses Shirley Temple and Judy Garland. This maturity made it easy for her to transition to adult roles and at the age of 16 she starred in Conspirator. It was a huge flop, but it showed her capability as a actor. That capability and her stunning looks got her the lead in A Place in the Sun with Montgomery Clift, making her a star. She hit her peak in the mid 50s when she got to work with Rock Hudson, James Dean, Robert Taylor, Richard Burton, and Paul Newman in multiple films and won an Academy award for her role in Butterfield 8.

Elizabeth was a fashion icon and chose clothes that would accentuate her ample bosom and waist. Taylor helped popularize and give women the option of Valentino and Halston designs. Later in the 1980s, Schering-Plough developed violet contact lenses after being inspired by Elizabeth’s amazing eyes. She continued working on films throughout her life, but by the late 70s her popularity dropped and her success as an actress declined. She remained famous and occasionally did interviews talking about her life, what is was like to work with famous actors, and her tumultuous love-life that resulted in eight marriages. She had a very full life and when she died this year on March 23, many fans came out to say good-bye to a woman that was not only a great actress but also a woman that cared deeply for people who were misunderstood by the public. She was the last iconic Hollywood star and will be greatly missed.
