From the Editor: Hair Cuff DIY

Who else is loving these shining metal hair cuffs that have been floating around Pinterest lately? I love that it’s a simple way of spicing up the average pony tail. After lusting over one of these, I knew I had to have one of my own and seeing that they’re scarce around town, I decided to make my own. Here’s how I did it:

First, you’ll want to stop by your local hardware store and pick up a couple of these copper pipe pieces. I found them in the plumbing section and was unsure of the size so I went with a 3/4″ and 1/2″. Now, you could stop right here and wear as is but I wanted mine to be gold…

I spy a diamond in the rough!

In order to make these look like 24 karat gold, you’ll need some nail polish. I chose to use a gold metallic polish from American Apparel. I must say, it worked amazingly well. Take whatever polish you choose and begin to paint the copper pipes. Use big, even strokes to minimize streaks. Let dry and coat with polish again. That’s two coats of gold! Let dry again and coat with clear nail polish to seal the color. I found that putting the rings on my finger was an easy way to paint and let dry.

Now that you’ve finished making your DIY hair cuffs, this is how to wear them:

First twist your hair, this makes it much easier to slide the cuff up the rope of hair and voila, you’ve done it! I used the large cuff for a loose pony and the small cuff for a chic, braided half-up/half-down do.

Do you love my do?!
