Ever Present Past: Dare to Flare

This week it’s all about the mid to late 1970s! By 1975, the woman’s liberation movement was in full swing and by ’79, more women than men entered colleges. Due to this revolution, more women than ever before entered the work place, allowing them to adopt a more tomboy style. A woman could go for a first date in jeans, buy musk perfume from the drug store or get a root beer float from the soda fountain by paying for it herself- no flirting with the boy behind the counter needed! Independence was in the air as she would throw her leather backpack in her bike basket and peddled downtown to a coffee shop to meet her boyfriend. The “IT” girl for the 70s would have to be Annie Hall living in NYC by her self with her own apartment, taking college courses part time, singing classics at nights clubs, all while dating a super neurotic-sweet-intellectual boyfriend, Woody Allen.

So now let’s talk about some of the must haves that are making there way back into our lives and closets.

FLARE JEANS: Once called Bellbottoms, (I’m not going to lie, I haven’t bought flares in about 5 or 6 years, however I love this look!) everyone from American Apparel to American Eagle has a this style in their store. Personally, I love these ones from Madewell. So pick a pair up! For a charming look, try pairing it with a staple white collared shirt tucked-in. Wear your hair down and you’re set for a casual date with friends or your significant other.

FRONT TIE SHIRT: A perfect feminine shirt that is for the girl who doesn’t know how to tie a tie (ME). This is the perfect thing for us. It can be dressed up or down by pairing it with your favorite skirt, trousers or jeans. I love it with a watch- not sure why, I just think it’s so cute!

CAPES: Stevie Nicks started this trend and I think it’s amazing! American Apparel has one that is perfect for fall/winter, however if you feel unsure, try a big oversized cardigan that drapes way down close to your knees for a comfy, casual day look instead.

NATURAL MAKE UP: A look that never goes out of style- girls in the 70s were tan, athletic and naturally fresh faced. Thanks to the women liberation movement, girls wanted to appear as unadorned as possible. Smudge a little eyeliner on the top lid right next to your lash line and then your bottom water line. Choose a long lasting natural color like Teddy from M.A.C.- it looks great on all eye colors. Swipe mascara on top and bottom lashes and use a mauve lipstick, or something a little darker than your natural lip color. Cover any blemishes with your fav concealer and set with powder.

I just love how this look can be dressed up or down and turned vintage-y or modern with very little effort and be made to suit your own fashion taste. Also be sure to watch Annie Hall, That 70s Show, or the ever-moody Virgin Suicides to get you in the mood for this look. Be sure to have fun where ever you decide to wear it!
