Ever Present Past: Pretty Rock&Roll

Hello, Carbon readers! This is a new column dedicated to past fashion looks and trends big or small and how they affect the current state of fashion. So come on and hop in our DeLorean and switch on the flux capacitor. Our first stop is the 60s!

60's Rocker

I know what you’re thinking either Twiggy or Woodstock Hippy both of which I think are amazing looks but I want to talk about the girls in-between who were the Rockers of the time. These were girls who thought champagne was water, and stuck to rum and coke or just straight whisky. They dated the rebel boys in their town and would later leave him broken hearted and steal his leather jacket, and a pack of cigarettes he hid from her very badly. They themselves were the first in being an independent woman they ditched the over the knee pleated puffy skirts and wore skintight pants and Miniskirts, bulky cashmere sweaters that were so fuzzy they had to spray it down with hair spray, and of course more and more eye liner to get the biggest eye opening cat eye.

A modern version of this girl would be Amy Winehouse, whom we tragically lost last month, she will be missed not just for her amazing voice, but the fact that she was one of the few girls who could rock a massive cat eye with skinny jeans and a polo shirt, or a dressed up look with a super short strapless dress with kitten heels. So now that we know who this girl is, let’s talk about the trends that she and we will all be wanting to get our hands on this fall.

Skinny Jeans are back again this season, and I think its safe to say they will be for quite some time after being part of our lives for five plus years so far. So go ahead and live a little and add another pair to your closet, you can never have too many and you don’t want to skip out on the fun prints… animal, floral, acid washed, hell I even saw a pair that had one leg white and the other black. You can’t go wrong even if it’s a simple pair of dark denim (my personal fav). High wasted seems to be the most popular choice. There’s more and more every year and this year is no exception. High waisted jeans are everywhere, but for the low wasted fan; don’t worry its still out there, just not as much.

Sweaters, ok so of course you’re thinking, “Um duh, sweaters are popular! It’s getting close to fall & winter, crazy lady!” Well I’m talking thick bulky get-your-cute-granny-on type of sweater. All I can say is, this is your go-to piece for throwing something on. I’ll talk more about this trend at a later date… but for now, pick one up since were going for a more sixties trend. Go for more of cropped look or a boat neck collar- which totally shows off a skinny neck. A cream, black, striped, or even a bold color with a super sexy cat eye would be lovely!

Cat Eye makeup and the bigger the better. This trend started in the summer and is going strong into the fall. Gone is the baby flick of Audrey Hepburn its time to say hello to massive smoked out eye makeup. If you would rather have a defined look, do thick top and bottom swipes of liner extended to long fine point, try to think The Ronettes circa 1965, don’t be scared go for it, but if you’re not quite sure, buy a pair of Cat Eye sunnies and you will be the envy of all you friends.

So I think that’s about it for this trend. These rocker girls are so much fun to talk about and dress like. They may have not been the poster children for the word, good, but their way of life influenced they way they dressed. They lived their life the way they wanted for better or worse, which is one of the best things about being a woman. We are who we are- no matter what. And we are damn proud of it!
