Conscious Fashion: Movin’ On Up

Getting ahead in the fashion industry isn’t easy. Even talented designers sometimes need a little extra help. Luckily, for a select number of designers, help may be just around the corner. Design Entrepreneurs NYC was established to help emerging designers improve their skills and gain invaluable business experience within the fashion world. Resembling a mini-MBA program, Design Entrepreneurs focuses on providing designers with the skills needed to run a fashion label. This includes everything from operations, marketing and financial management. Throughout the program, designers have the chance to work closely with industry experts and refine their business plans. Out of the 35 designers for the 2012 program, Tara St. James‘ unique style and eco-friendly perspective caught my eye.

St. James’ collections for Study are quirky and filled with attitude; they combine bold prints and interesting textiles while managing to stay chic and refined. With items ranging from high-wasted shorts to oversized origami inspired vests, this is a line that can add personality to any wardrobe, especially basics like a classic tee. To incorporate items from Study into your wardrobe, follow a few of Carbon’s tips on how to go back to the basics.

As the former creative director for Covet, an eco-friendly sportswear line, and now owner and head designer for Study, St. James is no stranger to the fashion world.St.James’ work is infused with sustainable practices wherever possible. The most recent collection for Study features hand-dyed silks and incorporates no-waste patternmaking. Tara’s sustainable work extends beyond production within the U.S; working with local artisans in India, Tara St. James has also produced hand-woven, limited edition textiles.

Although Study already seems to be headed in a fashion-forward direction, St. James says she is excited about having the opportunity within Design Entrepreneurs NYC to sit down and focus on creating her future business plan (ecosalon).
