Character Wear: Ilsa Lund (Casablanca)

While looking through some old classic movies, I stumbled upon one that I had yet to actually see. Casablanca is a classic from1942 that deserves some recognition and a trip once more into the lime light. Set in Africa during World War II, an American expatriate runs into former lover, Ilsa Lund. Ilsa, played by Ingrid Bergman, graces the screen as a young woman who has just left home. Her innocence and grace is translated through her classic style, giving me the perfect outfit to adapt using today’s trends.

In one scene, Ilsa is wearing a white jumper-like dress with a striped undershirt. Using today’s trends, I took some of the more popular pieces and formed an outfit with the same silhouette as Ilsa’s ensemble. I chose a white wrap-front maxi skirt to mimic the white A-line she is wearing. Different length maxi skirts are a must have this summer; they are easy to dress up or down depending on what layers you add to it. On top I found a simple skinny black striped tank top that would look perfect tucked into the maxi skirt. Then, for a layering piece I chose the extremely popular denim jacket that gives the whole look a more casual flare. For your feet, a black wooded-sole platform gives you height without adding the complication of a heel. Looking at Ilsa Lund’s attire, it would seem as though it is too outdated to adapt, but just take the shape of the ensemble and put some of your favorite pieces together and before you know it, you could be walking the streets of Casablanca while men swoon for your impeccable style.
