Conscious Fashion: Charity Dilemma

“What is the one most important thing our society needs? …That would be harsher punishment for parole violators… [silence] And world peace!” Modern society and pop culture (*cough*cough*Miss Congeniality anyone?) often make world peace the butt of jokes. But is it really such a silly notion to say that the one thing our society needs is world peace? Maybe. But maybe it’s just the obscurity of this lofty goal that makes us sigh as we hear the pageant reply of “world peace.”

Although there are many causes that need our support, we are currently faced with a charity dilemma. Faced with high fail rates, today’s charities lack: awareness, funding and following. In fact, 56% of charities fail because they lack proper funding. So, what can be done about this? Trying to answer this question is how Sevenly was born. Sevenly is a “movement to raise capital and awareness for the world’s greatest causes” (sevenly.com). Acting as a platform for change, Sevenly harnesses the power of community and design to raise awareness for over 50 charities a year. Each week, Sevenly features a new T-Shirt campaign. Designs for the campaign are unique and correspond with the mission of the selected charity. These campaigns not only raise awareness about worthy causes, they provide financial aid. Sevenly donates $7 from each sale to the charity of the week. Sales last for seven days and once the sale ends, those tees are gone forever! So, if you see something you like and a cause that you want to support, don’t wait around! This is the kind of impulse buying that you won’t feel guilty about.
